Local Elections Matter
The 2025 Consolidated Election has already started in Kendall County! Early Voting began Monday, March 17th, and Election Day is Tuesday, April 1st.
Voting in local elections, particularly in rapidly growing communities, holds immense significance. Kendall County remains one of the fastest-growing counties in Illinois! Now more than ever, voters must choose candidates who can confidently manage challenges that arise with an increasing population.
Unfortunately, voters tend to be less informed about candidates and issues in local elections. In Illinois, consolidated elections are typically held in odd-numbered years. The 2023 Consolidated Election had a meager 16% voter turnout in Kendall County.
This means that only a small percentage of the community is making decisions on who will represent them locally! It is likely because local races do not typically create the same level of excitement or media attention as presidential or congressional elections, that voter turnout pales in comparison. While national elections are often highlighted, local elections impact the community more directly. Local elections determine who from our community decides about fundamental services like schools, roads, public safety, and sanitation. As a result of the community vote, these elected officials influence the quality of life within Kendall County. School board members, community college board members, library board members, township positions, Mayors, Village Presidents, and city council members make choices that affect property taxes, zoning laws, and the availability of essential resources. These elected officials determine our school policies and curriculum, manage budgets, appoint boards, pass ordinances, enforce legislation, and regulate land use. These are all consequential decisions that impact our day-to-day lives.
Local elections are where individual votes have a tangible impact and provide an opportunity to hold elected officials accountable for their actions. By fulfilling their civic duty of voting, residents of Kendall County ensure that their voices are heard. This power allows voters to shape the future of their community.
